Hoboken 04:40
Saturday afternoon Nothing to do But read August has come around Everyone’s out of town But me Gonna walk to the river through an empty town Gonna get to the river as the sun go down Gonna stare across the river to the other side I came here long ago Put on my little show I’ve done okay Tried it like all the rest Not quite what I dreamed, I guess But I’ve done okay Gonna walk to the river through an empty town Gonna get to the river as the sun go down Gonna stare across the river to the other side “What do you see on the other side?” It’s not heaven “What do you see on the other side?” No, it’s not heaven It’s just Hoboken Yeah Gonna walk to the river through an empty town Gonna get to the river as the sun go down Gonna stare across the river to the other side To the other side To the other side

The streets are crowded and the buildings are so tall She takes my hand and she leads me to the sea We catch a bus We're lost in the city The sea is dirty and the sand is almost black Soldiers laughing from the balconies They point their guns We're lost in the city Floating through the night on the carnival Silver moon our only currency Quench my thirsty soul in the trembling city At dawn she takes me to the cemetery She paints twelve angels on my face and hands Then we make love and we're Lost in heaven Lost in heaven
3.
I love you, baby, you know I do I'm brimmin' with love, too much for you I wanna spread my joy across the world Spill my seed on an amateur Gonna smoke some dope, gonna drink some booze Pick up girls and boys on the avenues Gonna leave them drippin' in the sack Hit the road with Kerouac Gonna pray till I'm stoned Gonna lie down with my love saxophone Gonna dig some Monk, gonna play some Bird Hang on out with Allen Ginsberg John Coltrane's gonna blow some brass Jasper Johns' gonna kiss his ass Gonna pray till I'm stoned Gonna lie down with my love saxophone Is too much love a sin? Tenor, alto and baritone Any kind of saxophone Well, it don't take too much mesclun To see it's masculine and it's feminine Let me hear you scream, let me hear you squawk When I put that friction on your cork Let me tinkle with your ovaries Fellatio between my knees Gonna pray till I'm stoned Gonna lie down with my love saxophone I love you, baby, you know I do I'm brimmin' with love, too much for you

The walk of shame You’ve made the hall of fame again Your picture has been framed again Along the walk of shame No you won’t learn Your better angels have been spurned again Their dresses torched and burned again The rain has doused the flames The streets are lined with last night’s broken bottles You stagger home, a soldier from the battle Cattle to the slaughter When will it end This journey through the dark, my friend? You’re lonely and you can’t pretend You’re pretty any more It’s six o’clock, the night was so delicious But now a puddle is a mirror for Narcissus Better hurry, that’s a Walk sign No, don’t look back Don’t give yourself a heart attack The dawn is leaking in through all the cracks It needs someone to blame So hurry home Hole up behind your stone again Air-conditioned and alone again While they’re polishing your name Along the walk of shame
5.
You think you know it all You’re all grown up, you used to be small Now you’re tall You‘re gonna fall You better listen to me The apple never falls very far from the tree You think you’re free Wait and see I love you I don’t hate you No, I love you Because I made you I let you play in the garden You never said thank you or even beg your pardon You got a hard on I know what you are And now you’re ready for the world You look like a woman but you’re still a little girl Wait your turn I’m still driving this car I love you I don’t hate you No, I love you Because I made you I did it all for you So you better do what I tell you to do Because I made you

The sun shines through the trees The guests have all arrived The priest comes in and now the funeral begins For dear old Jim McBride His mother says a prayer "Lord, take him in your hands" Then Jimmy’s wife tells a story from dear Jimmy's life And the congregation stands And everybody sings a song And the children all sing along Goodbye, Jim McBride Goodbye, Jim McBride Gerry buys a round "Let's drink to our old friend He's gone away but we'll surely join him one day On that we can depend" And everybody sings a song And the children all sing along Goodbye, Jim McBride Goodbye, Jim McBride

It's On Me 02:43
The way you feel it’s on me The pain is real and it’s on me If you never heal it’s on me It’s all on me The tears you’re crying they’re on me All that lying it’s on me Your wasted time it’s on me It’s all on me Don’t ask for a reason, I beg you ‘Cos I got a feeling it’s not gonna help you I’m a bad boy, I’m a bad boy I’m a bad bad bad bad boy Your empty home it’s on me Yeah you’re alone now and it’s on me That mess in the kitchen it’s on me It’s all on me Not asking forgiveness ‘cos it’s on me God is my witness it’s on me This whole wretched business it’s on me It’s all on me Don’t ask for a reason, I beg you ‘Cos I got a feeling it’s not gonna help you I’m a bad boy, I’m a bad boy I’m a bad bad bad bad boy Don’t blame her It’s on me No don’t blame her It’s on me It’s all on me

Well, the kids are on the back seat They spilled their sodas on the floor They're curled up close together They were fighting just before And you promised her on Friday That you'd get them back by ten She was dressed up for a party You loved her once again And you drive across the Chesapeake With a cowboy and his squaw She'll have them back to school on Monday They don't need you any more You got them taffy on the boardwalk Quarters for the arcade Batman and Robin On a weekend holiday Batman's got a secret watch A different message every hour Robin wears a necklace Which gives her special powers And they'll defend you from the jellyfish They'll defend you from the sharks But you gotta bring a flashlight ‘Cos they're frightened of the dark They'll defend you from unhappiness If you say the magic words They'll defend you from your enemies And they'll take no prisoners You got them fast food on the freeway But now it's getting late For Batman and Robin And their weekend holiday Batman and Robin On a weekend holiday

Well I heard my baby, yes I heard my baby on the radio And I miss my baby and I curse the day I ever let her go She sang so sweetly yes she sang so sweetly, nearly made me cry Well I hurt my baby so I lost my baby now didn’t I? Well I watched my baby, yes I watched my baby give an interview And she looked so pretty it was such a silly foolish thing to do Then they showed her picture yes they showed her picture with another guy Well I hurt my baby so I lost my baby now didn’t I? Didn’t I take her for granted? Didn’t I take her for a ride? Didn’t I do just what I wanted Till the love inside her died? Didn’t I neglect her, disrespect her and affect her confidence? All she had to do was collect the evidence Well I begged my baby yes I begged my baby “come on back to me” She said “I’m sorry honey, go spend your money in the duty free” I said “it’s not over,” she said “yes it’s over here’s a kiss goodbye” Well I hurt my baby so I lost my baby now didn’t I? Yes I hurt my baby so I lost my baby now didn’t I? Yes I hurt my baby so I lost my baby now didn’t I?

Tears Of Joy 06:34
Just to feel her smile at me I would pay with tears Just to know she's wanting me I would pay with tears I wouldn’t pay with money I would pay with tears Just to kiss her poisoned lips I would pay with tears To slip the clip from her honey hair I would pay with tears I wouldn’t pay with money I would pay with tears Tears of joy Just to lie on her lily breast I would pay with tears To tear away her harlot's dress I would pay with tears I wouldn’t pay with money I would pay with tears Tears of joy

Dirty Spoon 02:52
Without her I just shuffle around I walk about naked in the middle of the afternoon I never do the dishes and I eat from a dirty spoon I eat from a dirty spoon Without her I just wait for the phone I tell my friends to call me, they all wanna leave me alone I order in take-out, never see the daylight in June And I eat from a dirty spoon I eat from a dirty spoon I eat from a dirty spoon Yeah yeah yeah yeah I eat from a dirty spoon Without her I’m a dog on the lam A social embarrassment in desperate need of a comb A rusticated werewolf howling at the honeydew moon Howling at the honeydew moon I eat from a dirty spoon I eat from a dirty spoon Yeah yeah yeah yeah I eat from a dirty spoon

Hello good morning, what’s your problem today? The rain is falling, the city’s calling you away When all your dizzy dreams have died Listen to the still small voice inside The boss just told you all your efforts were in vain Time to make a phone call as you wait forever for the train Well here’s some wisdom for the ride Listen to the still small voice inside Let it sing sing sing sing sing sing sing sing sing Let it sing sing sing sing sing sing sing sing sing When the world is screaming And your tears won’t hide Listen to the still small voice inside Hello good evening, did you accomplish what you planned? Don’t you know the feeling, too much supply no demand? Yeah it’s a drag, at least your tried Now listen to the still small voice inside Let it sing sing sing sing sing sing sing sing sing Let it sing sing sing sing sing sing sing sing sing Let it sing

Cry Baby 05:33
Cry baby Cry baby Cry baby Old lady Old lady Cry baby Though all your comfort disappears The doctor smiles, your daddy cheers Welcome to this vale of tears And cry Baby Your little face looks so forlorn You wept as soon as you were born They celebrate and yet you mourn Just cry Baby Cry baby

Little mama's boy in boarding school All the other boys they treat him cruel Got skinny tears climbing up his nose But he's gonna see his mama ‘cos he's Going home for Christmas Pretty girl with a big black eye She's fallen in love with the wrong kind of guy But big ol' daddy's gonna make her warm He's so happy ‘cos she's Going home for Christmas Lonesome man with a city job Made a big mistake when he kissed his boss ‘Cos the money's good but now she's in love One more month then he's Going home for Christmas Weary traveler, he's seen so much His eyes are bleary, he's lost his touch Just wandering around this crazy world He's gonna shave his beard, then he's Going home for Christmas Well, I left that school and I hit that girl And I quit that job and I went around the world And I miss my mama and I miss my dad And I'm so glad ‘cos I'm Going home for Christmas I'm going home for Christmas

You'll See 03:21
You’ll see, you’ll see It’s gonna be fine, it’s gonna be fone You’ll see, you’ll see It just takes time, only time I know that you’re hurting, you’re nursing the wound that you feel It’s not gonna kill ya, I tell ya you’re soon gonna heal You’ll see Bad luck, bad luck That’s what it was, that’s what it was Don’t give up, don’t give up Just because Because it’s a beautiful thing to be free and alive Let go of your fear I guarantee you’re gonna be surprised You’ll see Just open up your heart and don’t forget to breathe Just open up your heart and don’t forget to breathe You’ve made your confession, you’ve learned a new lesson it’s true There’s no need to hurry, I’m not gonna worry for you, you’ll pull through You’ll see You’ll see You’ll see You’ll see Just open up your heart and don’t forget to breathe

I don’t regret My foolish loves Those blessed nights With the daughters of God You’re a better man than I I mean it when I say You should be proud of your children And your righteous ways But I don’t regret All those hearts I stole Each was returned Each touched my soul And I can’t walk with you Along the path to Jesus I’m happy in my reverie I’m sorry that he bleeds for us The angels in their limousines The drugs we took on Halloween The films we saw, the books we read By tragic sinners long since dead The freak shows and the symphonies The carnival epiphanies Perhaps you think these memories are worth less than a damn? But they’re everything I am And I don’t regret I don’t regret No I don’t regret My sordid life It’s been a miracle And I saw the Light I saw Light

about

Spottiswoode & His Enemies’ LOST IN THE CITY is the seventh recorded adventure for a band of seven who, despite all adversity, never quit.
They've already done their rock set, their gospel confession, their Mediterranean odyssey, their Americana song cycle, their war allegory and their gentle pastoral collection.

With LOST IN THE CITY, the Independent Music Award Winners offer a tribute to resilience, served up New York style: a giddy brew of jazz, chanson, rock, blues and minimalism.

Stories of love and death in the Big Apple are peppered with self-portraits, landscapes and occasional snippets of advice. Spottiswoode’s lyrics capture the inner voices of a myriad of New Yorkers on any given day: by turns self-mocking, tormented, swaggering, introspective and elegiac.
Is this a farewell? If so, to what? Youth? His Enemies? Or the city itself?
