If a little boy Likes a little girl He should give the world To that little girl Tell her that he loves her Almost every day Put his arms around her Chase the clouds away If a little girl Likes a little boy She shouldn't get upset She shouldn't get annoyed If that little boy Takes a little time Waking up his heart Making up his mind Lots of little people In this little world Lots of little children Little boys and little girls

Nice Girl 03:52
I just wanna be sweet I just wanna be nice I just wanna stay calm I just wanna be gentle I don't wanna be hard I don't wanna be sexy I don't wanna be cool I don't wanna be clever I wanna be a nice girl I wanna be a nice girl Yeah I don't wanna pretend That I've learned all my lessons There's a sweet little thing Screaming inside I wanna be a nice girl I wanna be a nice girl Yeah I don't wanna be square But I don't wanna be hip No games and no flirtation Just pleasant conversation And it's not like I'm kidding I'm so tired of this mess There's a sweet little thing I'm a sweet little thing I wanna be a nice girl I wanna be a nice girl

Ugly Love 03:34
Ugly love My ugly love You're all that I dream of Your crooked face Your juju eyes Are all I need to fantasize Walk me down your ugly street Let me scratch to your underneath My ugly love Your gruesome smile I never thought That such a smile could break my heart Don't break my heart My ugly love It beats inside your velvet glove When you stand on your ugly feet Your ugly hand is all I need To pick me up My ugly love My ugly love Don't break my heart My ugly love).

I'm sorry I couldn't Be what you wanted I'm sorry I wouldn't I change every minute All the people inside me I brought them together I thought they told me I'd love you forever I change every minute I change every minute You shouldn't have trusted The things that I told you It couldn't have lasted I just wanted to hold you I change every minute I change every minute I change every minute
5.
Think I don't love her any more But I mustn't tell her till I'm sure 'Cause if I tell her now It will break her heart And she will cry Then I will start To love her again Seeing her like that In so much pain I would love her again I don't want to love her again I do not want more of the same thing Make a sacrifice But it's not enough She thinks she's always right When it comes to us But it isn't like What it was before I think I don't Love her any more "Love Her again!" I don't want to "Love her again!" I can't go back there again "Love her again!" I don't want to "Love her again!" Please don't take me there again Last night she beat me on the chest But I was strong I didn't say anything Lucky for me She didn't cry Though I could see the hatred In her eyes But I just laughed 'Cause it didn't hurt I didn't let it out I didn't say a word 'Cause If I tell her now It will break her heart And she will cry Then I will start To love her again Seeing her like that In so much pain I would love her again I don't want to love her again I do not want to love her again "Love Her again!" I don't want to

Do I make you happy? Do I make you smile? When the world is falling Through the sky And the planets chase Around and around Will they be there When you're down? Do you love my body Like I love yours? Have you ever felt this Way before? And though the sun is Full of holes It will be there When you're cold Your shell has made you weak It shields you from the sun Your shell has made you weak This love Will make you strong Do I write you letters When I'm away? When June starts slippin' Back to May And though the sun has Lost its shine It will be there Every time Your shell has made you weak It shields you from the sun Your shell has made you weak This love Will make you strong This love will make you strong This love will make you strong

What Love Is 03:45
I may not know what love is I only know it's not this It's not this I know with love there's no justice What's love for you, for me is just a kiss Just a kiss Love may be blind or just absurd But soon you'll find it's just a word You think you've found what you've been looking for But someday soon will you be so sure What love is? Love may be blind or just absurd But soon you'll find that it's just a word I may not know what love is I only know it's not this It's not this This is not what love is

I think I'm ready I think I'm ready To tell you To tell you I think I'm ready I know I want to Tell you To tell you I love you

Beggar of the Nile Throw him in It doesn't matter Where he's been Weigh him down with silver Weigh him down with gold Put rubies in his pockets And diamonds in his bowl He could be Jesus for all we know Maybe he'll float to Portugal He could be wearing the Imperial Cross When he hits the deck Rip it from his neck And choke him to death with an albatross Beggar of the Nile Gets on my nerves Throw him in the river Thats what he deserves Do it late at night When the river's dark We don't want him rescued By Noah and His Ark You can dress him up in a three piece suit If you wanna do it right, kill a prostitute A little Cleopatra, you can cut off her nose So she looks like the sphinx And when the body sinks The army won't care and the police won't know He could be Jesus for all we know Maybe he'll float to Portugal Weigh him down with silver, weigh him down with gold Put rubies in his pockets And fill his eye sockets With a Turkish cigar and the Dead Sea Scrolls Beggar of the Nile Throw him in It doesn't matter Where he's been

I love your nose and your little fountain pen I love your toes and the way they count to ten You shouldn't leave till we do it all again You and me and your big black big black big black grin There's plenty time to win the new crusade Plenty time to think up why you're late You shouldn't leave till we do it all again You and me and your big black big black big black Boy with the big black grin How did you get so thin? From reading the newspapers again and again Gets on your chinny chin chinny chin chinny chin chinny chin There's always time for one last cigarette There's always time for your bow and arrow kit You're sorry now but soon you won't regret You always win with your big black big black big black Boy with the big black grin How did you get so thin? From reading the newspapers again and again Gets on your chinny chin chinny chin chinny chin chinny chin Boy with the big black grin Does your mother know where you've been? Taking coals to Newcastle all over again Gets on your chinny chin chinny chin chinny chin chinny chin Big black big black big black big black big black

The Mine 02:50
Soon as I'd first met her I had laid my claim I drove my stake down in the dirt As she shivered in the rain And once her pretty eyes were closed I started diggin' in the ground I'm goin' down Well, I loved her for a year or two Until the seam was dry And when she'd given all she could I finally said goodbye She cried for so long That in her tears she drowned I'm goin' down So, I guess that you could call me A prospector of the soul Lord knows the work is dirty But I mine out all the gold And now I'm headin' on To the other side of town I'm goin' down

about

Spottiswoode’s debut solo record is a quiet and brooding affair, half noir half pop. A spare and cinematic meditation on love from a variety of mostly disillusioned perspectives. It inspired The New Yorker to describe Spottiswoode as "a genius" and The Washington Post to call him a "master of the late night vibe."

Recorded at Groovetown Studios in Washington DC just before the Englishman formed his New York band. Released just after.
